Cotton T-Shirts: A Practical Guide to Feel, Weight and Everyday Wear
Cotton is common in T-shirts, but the fibre name alone does not tell you how a garment will feel. Knit structure, fabric weight, finishing and fit can make two cotton tees behave very differently.
Feel and weight
Lighter fabrics can drape softly and feel airy, while midweight or heavier fabrics may hold a stronger silhouette. Neither is automatically better; climate, opacity and the fit you want should guide the choice.
Look at the complete garment
Check neckline construction, seam consistency, surface feel and whether the fabric supports the intended regular, boxy or oversized shape. Always follow the garment-specific care label because cotton blends and finishes can require different handling.
- Do not judge quality by fibre name alone.
- Consider weight together with fit.
- Check opacity if that matters to you.
- Use care instructions as the final washing reference.
