How to Wash Dark Clothes and Keep Black Looking Better for Longer

Dark clothing can gradually lose depth through washing, friction and heat. While no care routine can stop normal wear completely, gentler habits can reduce unnecessary stress on black and other deep colours.

Start with the label and colour separation

Follow the garment instructions and separate dark clothing where colour transfer is a concern. Turning suitable garments inside out can reduce direct surface friction during washing.

Avoid unnecessary heat

Use the temperature and drying method recommended for the garment. Excess heat can affect some fibres, finishes and shapes, so hotter is not automatically cleaner or better.

  • Wash when needed rather than automatically after brief wear.
  • Use a suitable detergent and amount.
  • Keep rough fasteners from rubbing against dark surfaces.
  • Dry and store away from conditions that unnecessarily fade fabric.
